Sights

Below are sections on Villages and Towns.

Entertainment made for you only! Seen near San Juan de Ortega.

Caves in Leon.

Death never seems far away. Church wall in Castrojeriz.

Memorial for 300 republicans executed by Franco’s forces in 1936 in a remote area east of San Juan de Ortega.

Some pilgrims die on the road, many probably by stroke. Arne Skov Schmidt, a Dane, died here in 2011. "Suddenly you were gone".

Eric Carroll nearly made it. Memorial in the outskirts of Santiago.

Villages

You pass through a lot of villages, and you meet people. Many will greet you "Buon Camino!". You answer "Hola" (hello), "Buon dias" (Good day, until 14:00), "Buon tardes" (Good afternoon, 14:00 - 20:00), or "Buona noces" (Good evening, after 20:00)

The flow of pilgrims is an important source of income for many villages, especially cafés and restaurants. The money helps to keep the Camino villages well maintained.

Don’t drop any litter on your way. Keep it until you pass a bin.

Welcome to Itero-de-la-Vega!

It is easy to find the route into a village, as it will go to the highest church tower. It can be more difficult to find the right way out of the village. Here Puenta La Reina-Gares.

There are many bends and corners in the villages. You follow the blue mark with a yellow arrow. There is one in the middle of the picture.

In Galicia, many villages have walls and stables built of stone without mortar

Show consideration and share the road!

Towns

The route goes through Pamplona, Burgos and Leon to Santiago. You will be led to the cathedrals and a number of other churches. Take care, because there are many sharp turns in the middle of the cities.

The entrance to Burgos, a boring, noisy, straight road. I propose you call a taxi here, if you intend to skip the Fromista-Astorga stage later (see below).

The cathedral in Burgos

Convento de San Marcos, Leon

The sidewalk is often very uneven in the large towns. Walk here, and you think "I’ll never reach Santiago". Seen in Leon.
